This picture, or more specifically its title, is a wonderful example of why I need a continuity editor. Part of it says “Cascadia Metropolitan Zone” But the “Montebello District” is in California. The problem was that when I made this picture I thought that Cascadia, a super-region in America, included California. It doesn’t. So I changed the “Cascadia Metropolitan Zone” to the “Western American Metropolitan Zone”. It’s meant to be a mega-city stretching from around Tijuana up to around Vancouver; in other words, the western coast of the United States plus a bit. But of course you can’t just go around changing the names of old pictures that people already own. Such is life.

The background of the picture is heavily influenced by the manga and anime movie Tekkonkinkreet. That movie features one of the coolest cityscapes ever put to film, and that’s saying something. The motorbike is inspired in part by an anime called Rideback (there’s a manga, but I never read it), which was animated by the famous studio Madhouse, but which I don’t think made many waves with western audiences. It’s an okay series, I remember enjoying it at the time, but it’s not terribly memorable. Some of the mech designs were interesting though. There is also a good bit of influence from Masamune Shirow’s mech designs, but with my stuff, that goes without saying...
